A 28-year-old pregnant woman has fallen into a coma after falling seriously ill with COVID-19, according to reports.
While in a coma, The Sun reports that doctors performed an emergency cesarean.
Kelsie Routs woke up from a coma and found out that she had given birth to her baby boy, Kobe, a week earlier.
According to The Sun, an unvaccinated 23-year-old woman from Lincolnshire, England, woke up from a induced coma and found she had given birth a week earlier..
Kelsie Routs was 28 weeks pregnant when she was taken by ambulance to hospital on August 8 after falling ill with COVID-19, the graphic designer said in a Facebook post.
She had developed pneumonia and her lungs had started to fail, she said.
The Sun reported that she was put into a coma to give her body a chance to recover.
Routs said on Facebook that doctors performed an emergency cesarean two days later, to “relieve the pressure” on her lungs, and were successful in delivering her newborn baby.
Routs woke up seven days later, according to The Sun, and discovered that she had given birth to a baby boy named Kobe, who weighed just under 4 pounds and was born 12 weeks prematurely.
“Waking up from a coma and having a newborn baby – it’s just too much to freak out,” Routs told The Sun. “I know the doctors must have done it to protect the baby, but the shock doesn’t really cover him.”
She slowly recovered, the mother said on Facebook and was gradually taken out of sedation and then life support.
Routs’ message to his friends on Facebook was to take COVID-19 seriously. “I am only 23 years old, I had not been vaccinated without any health problems,” she wrote. “Just take it seriously. I suddenly saw such a massive increase in the number of people contracting it and getting sick.”
