Update: The listing has since been deleted and appears to have been a mistake on the part of the retailer.
Komplett, one of the largest Norwegian e-sellers of computers and devices, presents two versions of the ASUS GeForce RTX 3070 ROG Strix OC V2 LHR on their website. The first is a brand new GPU that costs 9,799 Norwegian crowns, or 1,146.48 USD. But, there was a surprising listing for a used version of the GPU, found by Reddit user OryxOski1XD.
The Norwegian website appears to be selling an ASUS GeForce RTX 3070 ROG Strix OC V2 LHR-Demo – a used GPU – for 11,499 NOK, or US $ 1,754.88. That’s over $ 600 more than the cost of a brand new version of the same card.
The Komplett website explains the product in more detail, in a completely transparent manner, stating: “The item is used in demonstration / replaced by the supplier.” The online store continues to explain that the product, of which there is only one quantity sold, is “maybe worn”, may not have the original packaging, the product may have dents or scratches from normal use, and “[m]accessories are missing which are not necessary for the functioning of the article. “A warranty is also mentioned for the product, but it is not certain that the product meets the typical manufacturer’s warranty, at a possible warranty through the website, or no warranty at all.
Reddit user OryxOski1XD updated a few hours ago after contacting the website. He declares,
A small update. I spoke to customer support and they apparently take it with someone. This isn’t the first time this has happened with these guys, but it’s worse with other small retailers here, where some are selling used 3060 cards for around $ 1000 each and people are buying
It looks like Komplett isn’t the seller of the second-hand ASUS graphics card after all. The online store seems to be reviewing it, but as of this writing, the prices haven’t changed for either product yet.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen resellers, third-party sellers, or individuals attempting to take advantage of the GPU shortage that still plagues the world. We recently reported that the two biggest manufacturers, AMD and NVIDIA, don’t see the shortage end until the second half of 2022 or so.
It is difficult to say whether the used ASUS GPU is sold by a private individual or by the online store itself. On e-commerce sites like Amazon, they require users to place their company / seller’s name on the products they are trying to sell to consumers. In this case, it is not known who the seller of the product is.
Wccftech contacted Komplett for a statement on October 5. A representative of the computer seller only contacted us this morning of October 8, 2021. The answer to our question about the price differences was as follows:
We are investigating this and will send you our response as soon as we are finished.
[NAME UNDISCLOSED FOR PRIVACY PURPOSES]
Pending a statement from Komplett, after verification of both products, the used ASUS GeForce RTX 3070 ROG Strix OC V2 LHR – Demo appears to be no longer available on the company’s online store, stating that the product “n ‘ is more in our range ”, but offers alternatives by contacting them directly for other alternatives for GPUs.
Another discovery this morning was that the post on Reddit was deleted by moderators, to “keep communities safe, civil and true to their purpose.”
Deletion of the post is not safe, unless one of the moderators at NVIDIA Subreddit has been contacted to delete the post by the same Komplett representative who contacted us or another online store representative. What does not make sense is that the Reddit user was not malicious in the post. In fact, the user was quite polite and updated everyone who saw the post he heard from a Komplett rep, stating that they were reviewing it.
Wccftech will update this story with more details after receiving an official statement from Komplett representatives.
