This week marks the start of the popular Raglan Arts Weekend (RAW), with the exhibition previewing on October 1, 2021, unveiling 84 works of the seaside city’s top artistic talent.

The exhibit will run for three weeks ahead of RAW, which is slated for the three-day Labor Weekend from October 23-25, 2021.

Each year, thousands of visitors come to this sunny seaside town to sample the creativity and artistry for which Raglan is famous. Armed with trail maps, visitors plan self-guided routes around the beautiful West Coast town and its immediate surroundings, visiting artists in their unique studio spaces and purchasing works of art, some of which are internationally recognized and very high level.

The gallery space at the Old School Arts Center, the hub of RAW, this week becomes the “home” of several RAW showcase artwork, as well as the extremely popular 300×300 that will sell for $ 200 each. , a fraction of their regular price, to raise money for the non-profit event. The theme of this year’s exhibition is:
“And then we took a break / Reflections from a Covid world”
and interested parties must be quick to secure parts before they are retrieved.

“The theme was decided before Delta, when New Zealand was largely Covid-free after the first lockdown,” says Nicky Brzeska, RAW coordinator. “It’s even more appropriate now with the current state of affairs, and we know it will resonate with a lot of people who want to get a work of art that illustrates this complex snapshot in time,” she says.

This year’s event is the largest to date, with 42 artists, including 13 new artists, and covers a very wide range of media: sculpture, painting, photography, metalwork, encaustic, printmaking, illustration, pottery, weaving, textile art and designer. jewelry.

RAW is getting stronger with the publicity and grants that support the Folk Art Festival, including a grant for the second year in a row from the well-respected Chartwell Trust. This year, the team developed a new “Raglan Arts Guide” booklet, launched a new website and purchased posters from professional artists with funding.

The preview exhibition will be open daily from October 1 (including weekends) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until October 25, 2021 at The Old School, 5 Stewart Street, Raglan.

RAW will be held during Labor Weekend October 23-25, 2021 – studios will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
