Our automotive and off-road driving expert Bryon Dorr had the chance to put the RAM 1500 TRX to the test in a volcanic lunar landscape outside of Flagstaff, Arizona. He came back even more impressed than he already was with this predator at the top of the all-terrain. world of trucks.

Of course, the TRX RAM has a few drawbacks. For starters, it’s a whopping 88 inches wide (that’s 8 inches larger than a standard 1500 RAM).

It also doesn’t have a 2WD mode, which means it’s much harder to drift on the sidewalk, and it drinks premium dino juice pretty quickly. Oh yeah, and that’ll get you way back north of the $ 70,000 starting price, most likely north of $ 100,000 with the crazy dealer’s current “market fit” fee.

I wrote a first driving test about the RAM 1500 TRX about a year ago before it was released to the public. Since then the truck has sold quickly across the world and I have had a few more opportunities to get behind the wheel.

My last TRX driving adventure was in the Cinder Hills OHV area outside of Flagstaff, Arizona.

Volcano Driving

After a short highway jaunt where the TRX easily went way too fast, we hopped off the curb and aired. The rest of the day was full of fast gravel, very steep hills, two windy and rocky tracks, and deep loose ash.

The hills were on the sides and inside the ash cones. These dormant volcanoes last erupted around 900 years ago and have since slowly eroded and destroyed.

The Cinders, as it’s called, is the only area in Arizona where you can roam freely off-road without worrying about staying on designated routes. It’s also a truly unique landscape that suits the big and powerful TRX perfectly.

The TRX’s big tires, large wheel travel, and impressive Bilstein shocks are perfectly suited for soaking up the rocky, rugged Cinders trails.

Combine these attributes with great power, smart drive modes, and awesome comfort, and you’ve got the recipe for a really great day of off-road adventures – at speeds far higher than any production vehicle is capable of. to do.

The interior of the TRX offers an excellent mix of materials and special attention to contact points. It feels good to be in a TRX! The suede contact points are both sporty and luxurious. RAM went the extra mile with this treatment, even wrapping the suede grab / “oh shit” handles.

The seats are quite adjustable and comfortable. They are also heated and cooled, but unfortunately they do not offer a massage function. The rear passengers also benefit from a fairly comfortable bench seat and generous legroom.

The huge 12-inch touchscreen dominates the center of the dashboard and offers great graphics and plenty of features. However, I’m not impressed with the load times of some pages or the too many buttons surrounding the screen.

It’s also a bit annoying how many screen button presses are required to pull the rear view camera up front. But you can add the tracking camera to the customizable “dock” at the bottom of the screen.

In the TRX, you also get a gear selector on the center console. I find this type of gear selector to be infinitely better than the rotary dial selector found in most RAM 1500 models. On the steering wheel you also get metal paddle shifters which not only look good on the wheel. touch, but also work quite quickly and smoothly.

Turn off nannies

With great power comes great responsibility. For an automaker to deliver insane power, like the 702 ponies in the TRX, there must be quite a few driver aids (computer nannies) to prevent the average driver from instantly wrapping that machine around the telephone pole on the closer.

The TRX, of course, comes with a full suite of computer support to help you maintain control of the vehicle and harness the great power coming under the hood. He also has 4WD / AWD full time, because 2WD would only beg for a lot of burnouts and smoky drifts.

This truck weighs over 6,396 pounds which can create a lot of momentum in one direction and be extremely difficult to control without power being sent to all four wheels and computer nannies to keep you in control.

I like the ability to turn off nannies and drift off if I want to. While you absolutely can’t turn everything off, and you can’t put the TRX into 2WD mode, there is a quick way to turn most nannies off. Simply press and hold the ESC (Electronic Stability Control) button on the center console for 5 seconds and wait for the beep.

My favorite way to drive the TRX is in 4WD Auto, Baja drive mode, and with all the nannies turned off. Sure, it’s a bit more nervous and can bite you a bit easier, but it’s so much fun!

Step on the fine pedal with authority and listen to this compressor force huge amounts of air into the engine. Moaning is addicting!

The latest special edition TRX model, it just debuted last week at the Texas State Fair. The ignition consists of a lot of orange inside and out, new graphics on the bedside tables and a new machined wheel look.

Only 875 of the 2022 RAM 1500 TRX will be sold in the United States. They will therefore undoubtedly benefit from a premium mark-up from dealers who manage to get their hands on it. If you were wondering, the only way new ford raptor beats the TRX is to have a 2WD mode and offer 37-inch tires from the factory. Otherwise, the TRX remains the ultimate predator in the off-road truck world.

What better way to get your friends and outdoor gear off the beaten track quickly and with a smile on your face? No, no, there isn’t. Of course, that’s only true if you can beat price, size, and fuel economy (10 mpg in the city, 14 mpg on the highway, and 12 mpg combined).
